Sobriety & Mind

The Harder Half

The part that doesn’t photograph well

No tire flips here. Just a guy, a lot of quiet nights, a therapist he almost cancelled on three times, and the slow work of figuring out why he drank in the first place.

The count, honestly kept

Sobriety timeline — not a straight line

01

Day 1, again

Told my brother instead of just “deciding.” Saying it out loud made it real and a little embarrassing, which turned out to be the point.

02

Week 6 — the slip

A bad week at work and four beers I don’t fully remember choosing. Didn’t spiral. Just started counting again the next morning.

03

Day 40

Slept through the night for the first time in a year. Cried in the shower about it, unclear why exactly.

04

Month 3 — the relapse

A wedding, an open bar, and old permission slips I thought I’d shredded. Went back to zero. Hated that, then got over hating it.

05

Today

Currently on my best streak. Not celebrating early. Just showing up to it, one uneventful evening at a time.

The other project: my head

Therapy, anxiety, small breakthroughs

Started therapy the same month I quit drinking, because it turns out those were never two separate problems.

My therapist asked what I was actually avoiding when I reached for a drink. Took me eleven sessions to answer honestly: quiet.

Anxiety used to feel like weather — something that just happened to me. Now I can usually name the front moving in before it lands, which isn’t the same as stopping it, but it helps.

Breakthrough, small but real: I canceled plans without a fake excuse and didn’t spend the night convinced everyone hated me for it.

Days without a drink, best streak so far

“Sobriety didn’t make me happy. It just stopped hiding whatever I actually was. Turns out that guy needed some work too, but at least I could finally see him.”

What Actually Works

Tools that hold up at 9pm on a bad day

01

Journaling, badly

No prompts, no gratitude lists. Just ugly, unfiltered pages until the urge loses its grip. Nobody’s grading the handwriting.

02

Cold walks

Fifteen minutes outside, no headphones, no destination. The cold seems to shock the craving out of me almost every time.

03

Calling a friend

Not texting — calling. Hearing an actual voice does something a scroll never will. Usually takes three tries to hit send.
