Fitness Journey

The Three Threads

Tires, trails, and no excuses

No gym membership. No coach. Just a driveway, a busted-up tractor tire, a bike that’s older than my sobriety attempts, and a pair of running shoes that have seen better decades. This is where the actual work happens.

Bodyweight & Tire Flips

Started with push-ups I could barely finish and a tire I could barely rock. Some weeks I add reps, some weeks my lower back tells me to sit down and reconsider my choices. Progress isn’t a line, it’s a scribble.

Mountain Biking

The trail behind the house has humbled me more times than I can count — one wipeout left a scar I now consider a landmark. Still, nothing clears my head like dirt, roots, and momentum.

Running

I hated running for thirty-two years. Now I merely dislike it, which honestly feels like a personality transplant. Slow miles, loud lungs, occasional victories against my own doubt.

Behind the Setup

No trainer. No mirrors. No spotify playlist called “Beast Mode.”

Just a concrete slab, a tire I found on Craigslist, and enough stubbornness to keep showing up even when the reps are ugly. This is a documentation project, not a highlight reel.

No Gym, No Coach

"There's nobody here to tell me my form is off or to spot me on the last rep. It's just me, a rusty tire, and whatever version of discipline I managed to scrape together that morning."

That’s the whole training philosophy, honestly. Show up, figure it out, don’t quit when it gets ugly — which it does, often, loudly, in front of no one but the neighbor’s dog.

This week’s log

Mon

Tire flips: rough

Only got through 40 flips before my grip gave out. Skipped the run I planned. Ate cereal for dinner. Logging it anyway.

Wed

New trail, new bruise

Found a rooty descent that ended with me in a bush. Bike’s fine. Ego needs a minute. Riding it again Friday.

Fri

Slow mile, good mile

9:12 pace, way off my best, but I ran it after a rough sleep and didn’t stop. Some days that’s the whole win.

Sat

PR on flips

62 flips in one set, personal best by a mile. No idea where that came from. Taking the credit anyway.

Sun

Rest day, mostly

Body said no. Did some stretching, watched bike videos, felt guilty for twenty minutes, then let it go.

Sun

Planning next week

Adding a second tire session and a longer ride. Also buying gloves — my palms have opinions about the tire.
